SCNT research cloning can be used for the creation of a blastocyst as a source for ES cells. Human ES cells are pluripotent, which means that they can generate all the human cell types and are also capable of self-renewal, for at least some time. The clinical potential for these ES cells could be enormous. Among other significant clinical applications, ES cells derived through SCNT could be used for the treatment of incurable diseases and injuries and the development of immune-compatible tissues for transplantation.

Using SCNT cloning to deliberately create an early human embryo, where ES cells could be derived from, clearly involves the dismantling of the donor embryo. Therefore, this method raises serious ethical concerns about the objectification of these early human beings and the moral status of the preimplantation embryo. The creation of hybrid entities through SCNT may be the way to avoid these serious ethical concerns while meeting the need for treating incurable diseases.
